A playlist is a curated collection of videos or audio files that play sequentially. Playlists can be created and managed either from the Admin portal or directly from My Account in the Media portal. This article covers the Admin portal workflow.
In this article:
Before you begin:
To create and manage playlists in the admin portal, you need the ContentAdmin and AccessToAdministration permissions.
Upload videos or audio to add them to the playlist.
Overview
Before diving in, here is a quick overview of where playlists can be created, managed, and watched in RMP.
The Admin portal is the root application - from here, content managers can create and manage playlists across all portals at once. This is what this article covers.
The Media portal is a sign-in-required environment where the same playlist management capabilities are available directly via My Account. If you are publishing content to this single portal, you can manage your playlists there without switching to the admin portal.
The Public portal requires no sign-in. Playlists can be published there, but it offers no playlist management - it is a viewing-only environment.
Add a playlist
Click Playlists > Create and fill in the form:
Type: choose whether this playlist will contain videos or audio files. A playlist cannot contain both types.
Title: it will be displayed on the portal and is important for search results.
Description: just like the title, it’s displayed on the portal and is important for search results.
-
Viewing permissions: set to
Public - accessible to all registered users,
Unlisted - limits access to anyone with the direct link,
Restricted - locks it down to specific users and groups, learn more.
Viewing permissions apply across all portals selected in Published on.
Enable external public page: Option to generate a public access URL for the playlist. Note that individual videos in the playlist must also have external access enabled; otherwise, they will not be added to the playlist.
Published on: Once selected, corresponding links are generated to allow access to the playlist page. Users can access the playlist through the portal or directly via the generated link. Note that individual videos must also be published to the same portal to appear in the playlist.
Add media to playlist
Once your playlist is created, you can populate it with videos or audio you have uploaded earlier.
1. Open the playlist record and select the Videos tab.
2. Click + Add playlist items.
3. Select media items.
4. Click Confirm.
5. Optional: drag items into the order you want. This order determines the playback sequence for viewers and remains fixed until you change it manually.
6. Click Save to apply.
Update playlist details
The General tab covers everything about how your playlist is presented and who can access it. From here, you can edit a title, description, viewing permissions, or the applications (portals) where the playlist is published.
You can also enable an external public page here - once enabled, a shareable URL is generated that you can copy or open directly:
Setting a thumbnail
Below the player on the details page, you can set the playlist thumbnail.
By default, the playlist thumbnail is taken from the first video in the playlist. If the first video has a custom thumbnail, it will be used; otherwise, the auto-generated one applies. You can override it by:
A screenshot from the selected timestamp - Grab thumbnail.
Uploading your image - Custom thumbnail.
File requirements:
Recommended format: PNG
Max file size: 150kb
Ratio: 16:9
Use tools like Compress Image Tool for compression.
Embed
The Embed tab gives you an iframe code you can drop into any external page. You can set the player size, choose the location of playlist videos (right or bottom), and toggle options like autoplay, loop, and mute on load. For full configuration details, see What player parameters can I manage?.
Featured playlist
Featured carousels are available on the Media portals, not on the Public portals (portals that do not require a sign-in).
If you’d want more spotlight for your playlist, you can feature it on the home page of your portal:
Select Home page > Featured carousels.
Click Add carousel.
Select Custom playlist as the carousel type.
Click Select playlist, pick the playlist you want to highlight from the list, and click Confirm.
Give the carousel a display name - this is what visitors will see as the section heading on the homepage. Then, click Create.
Your playlist will appear as a featured carousel on the portal homepage:
Requirements for featuring:
Content Admin permission is required.
The playlist must be published to the Media portal.
The playlist must be set to Public visibility.
The playlist must not be empty.
Each carousel holds one playlist only.
You can have up to 12 carousels total.
Drag carousels to reorder - the sequence you set here is what your audience sees:
Display names can be edited, and carousels can be removed at any time.
If you'd prefer not to curate manually, default carousels (most viewed, most liked, most commented, newest) are also available and populate automatically based on activity.
Playlist is now ready for your audience. Once published to a Public or Media portal, viewers can access and watch it there.
