If you use a live captioning service to send captions with a live stream, Ravnur automatically extracts them from the stream's recorded (VOD) version and converts them into a sidecar caption file. This lets you translate, download, and edit the captions after the live event ends.

Concepts
The following terms appear throughout this article:
| Term | Description |
|---|---|
| CEA-608/708 | The data stream format used to send live captions along with a video stream. |
| Muxing | The process of combining the caption stream with the video stream so a player can display both together. |
| Sidecar caption file | A caption file that's separate from the video file but linked to it for playback. |
How extraction works
The streaming server muxes the CEA-608/708 caption stream with the video stream so the player can display both together. Once the stream is recorded, Ravnur inspects the resulting file. If it finds embedded captions, it extracts them and saves them as a WebVTT file.
The extracted captions carry the same formatting as the original CEA-608/708 stream. If the source used all caps, the extracted captions do too.
Review and publish
Extracted captions appear in the caption editor for review and editing.
Extracted captions are unpublished by default. Publish them in the caption editor to make them visible to viewers.
