The caption editor lets you upload a caption file for a video or generate captions automatically from the audio track (generating captions automatically). Once you load the file, use the editing panel to change segment text, adjust segment timing, split or delete a segment, and switch the caption language.

Select a video, then click Captions below the player.
Caption file requirements
Caption files must be in WebVTT format. To convert a file from another format, such as SCC, TTML, or TXT, use a converter such as Subtitle Edit: upload the file, click Download, select the WebVTT (.vtt) format, and save it.
Uploading a new caption file replaces the existing one. Click the download icon to save a copy before you upload a replacement.
Upload a caption file to generate a WebVTT file with segment timestamps. Upload a transcript file to generate plain text without timestamps.
Automatic captioning transcribes the audio track and isn't perfect: background noise, overlapping speech, and mumbling reduce accuracy. Use the editor to clean up the result.
Publish captions
Captions become visible to the public only after you publish them. Click Save, then click Published in the top-right corner to make the captions appear in the player and the transcript panel.
Click Unpublished to hide the captions. You can edit captions in either state.
Change a segment's text
- Click the caption segment you want to edit.
- Edit the text in the box below the player and check how it looks in the player.
- Move to the next segment. Ravnur saves the previous segment automatically.
Tip:
Use the player's left and right arrow keys to jump back and forward by 10 seconds while reviewing segments.
The chars/sec value above the edit box shows whether the segment has too much text for its duration.
Change a segment's start and end time
Use the Start and End fields to adjust a segment's duration, for example after moving words to another segment or when the timing doesn't match the video. You can adjust a segment only up to the boundary of the previous or next segment.
To shift multiple segments at once, use Shift caption timing instead.
Split a segment
- Select the segment you want to split.
- Click the Split segment icon above the edit box.
- Edit the text and timing of each new segment.
The segment splits into 2 segments of equal duration. Click Discard changes in the top-right corner to revert.
Delete a segment
- Click the segment you want to delete.
- Click the Delete icon below the player.
Deleting a segment doesn't affect the surrounding segments.
Switch the language
The editor accepts caption files for multiple languages. Add a caption file, select its language, and upload it.
Automatic caption generation transcribes only the original media language. To add captions in another language, upload a translated file. You can create one with Subtitle Edit, using the Auto-translate option.
Click Select language version to manage uploaded languages.
Viewers select the language using the CC button on the player.
