There are two types of live sources you can use: RMS (Ravnur Media Services) and Generic (any .m3u8 HLS playlist URL). Each type has its unique purpose and advantages.
In general, the RMS live source offers advanced live stream processing and post-production options that are not available with the generic live source. Since the Ravnur Media Service mirrors Azure Media Services, you can benefit from most of the extensive features that AMS previously offered without having to worry about switching accounts.
When Should I Use the RMS Live Source?
Consider using an RMS live source when you want to:
- Record and Post Your Live Stream: Save and share your live broadcasts for on-demand viewing. For events longer than 24 hours, only the last 24 hours of the stream will be retained in the recording.
- Encode Your Live Stream into Multiple Qualities: improve the viewing experience to different internet speeds and device capabilities.
When Should I NOT Use the RMS Live Source?
An RMS live source might not be necessary if:
- You Have a Long-Running Stream Without Recording Needs: For streams that do not require recording or on-demand playback.
- You Already Have a .m3u8 HLS Playlist URL: If you already possess an HLS playlist URL and simply want to publish it using the Ravnur Media Platform.
If your event requires any of the advanced features listed above, choose the appropriate RMS live source. Remember, you can create multiple live sources with different configurations (e.g., cloud encoding on/off, low latency on/off) to best suit your event’s needs. This flexibility allows you to select the optimal live source for each specific broadcast. Let us know if you need this option – we can help add multiple accounts.
